Malawi’s government has confirmed that President Arthur Peter Mutharika will return to the country Monday October 2 – days after attending the U.N. General Assembly meeting of heads of state and government in New York.

A cross-section of Malawians have demanded information on when the President will return home after the 72nd Unga for the world leaders’ meet officially ending on Monday.
They contend that all the world leaders who participated in the U.N. meeting have returned to their respective countries and wonder why Mutharika has yet to do so.
Chief Secretary to Office of President and Cabinet Lloyd Muhara in a correspondence to ministers and top government officials seen by Nyasa Times said the Head of State will arrive through Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe on Monday at 2pm.
Mutharika is set to depart New York this Saturday.
University of Malawi’s (Unima) Chancellor College political scientist Ernest Thindwa in comments quoted by a local daily newspaper observed that Malawians have for long tolerated the culture of authorities concealing the President’s trips to Unga.
He said: “Holders of public offices do not want to be held accountable, the President is staying in US on the expense of a tax payer and when government is appealing to everybody to tighten the belt because the economic situation is not all that good we would expect them to be in the forefront in terms of ensuring that they are indeed living to their words.”
President of of the Malawi Law Society, Khumbo Soko said the public demands for information about the president’s whereabouts are legitimate.
